New Exoplanet Hunter of Europe: is built from five common digital cameras.
The European Southern Observatory ESO has made the first successful observations with its latest exoplanet hunter, the MASCARA Multi-site All-Sky CAmeRA station in Chile. It is the second MASKARA station in the world, and the first in the southern hemisphere of the planet. North and South hemisphere stations are needed to get coverage of the whole skyIgnas Snellen, head of the MASARA project at the University of Leiden, said in a press release. With the second station at La Silla now in place, we can monitor almost all of the brightest stars in the sky.
Beyond the coverage of two hemispheres, MASCARA is notable for its compact and economical design. If the hunt for exoplanets catches the mind of giant antennas and orbital space telescopes like Kepler, you may be disappointed. MASK consists of five digital cameras with components available in the market. Take repeated measurements of the brightness of thousands of stars and use software to find the light darkening of a star's light as a planet crosses the face of the star.
MASK looks for the brightest stars in the sky that are not being tested by space or ground surveys. It can control stars approximately ten times weaker than can be seen with the naked eye. MASCARA is mainly looking for so-called hot Jupiteres, giant worlds that are physically similar to Jupiter, but orbit much closer to their progenitor stars, resulting in burning surface temperatures. MASK also has the potential to discover super-Earth and Neptune-sized planets.
